Official reproduction of Edvard Munch's work The Sun, (1912-1913) from MUNCH's collection.
This renowned artwork was created for the University of Oslo's new ceremonial hall (Aula), which was built to celebrate the university's centenary in 1911. It marked Munch's first major commission for a public institution, and he invested many years into the prestigious project, producing hundreds of preparatory sketches and paintings. The MUNCH collection holds several versions of The Sun, including this one, painted between 1912 and 1913.
The inspiration for this motif came from the dramatic coastline of Kragerø, a town where Munch lived during the time he was working on the university commission. After exploring a range of possible themes for the central mural, Munch settled on this image as a direct symbol of enlightenment, perfectly capturing the ideals and aspirations of the university.
