Official reproduction of Edvard Munch's work The Girls on the Bridge, (1927) from MUNCH's collection.
Munch first painted the motif in Åsgårdstrand in 1901, but, like many of his works, there are multiple versions of it. The version in the museum's collection is from 1927 and was created for inclusion in Munch's major exhibition in Berlin that year. Small changes and adjustments across the various versions led Munch to see these repetitions as an exploration of the expressive energy in each motif. The motif exists in several painted versions, and there are also drawings and prints.
