Official reproduction of Edvard Munch's work Weeping Woman, (1907-1909) from MUNCH's collection.

Edvard Munch’s Weeping Woman is part of his lifelong exploration of human emotion, intimacy, and existential struggle. The motif emerged in various media, beginning in 1907 with a photograph of the professional model Rosa Meissner, whom Munch captured standing nude in a hotel room in Warnemünde on the Baltic coast of Germany. This image likely served as a reference for three drawings, six paintings, and one print that followed soon after. The motif continued to evolve, culminating in a plaster sculpture in 1914 (later cast in bronze in 1932) and a further print in 1930.

Between 1919 and 1921, Munch revisited the subject once again, producing three paintings and a corresponding print that repeated the woman’s posture—this time as part of Model by the Wicker Chair. The variations across these works highlight Munch’s experimental approach to repetition, where no single version can be considered the definitive original. Instead, each piece stands as a unique exploration of the same emotional theme.

In Weeping Woman, the figure is depicted with her head bowed deeply, her facial features nearly unrecognizable. Munch’s variations of this motif place her in different spatial surroundings—ranging from intimate bedroom settings to more abstract, undefined interiors. In sculptural form, he further freed the figure from any fixed context, emphasizing its universality. The lack of a distinct background invites the viewer to impose their own interpretation, shifting the meaning of the piece depending on perspective.

Seen individually, each work within the Weeping Woman series expresses an overwhelming sense of desolation. When viewed as a group, however, the motif takes on a different dimension—one that highlights the interplay between the figure and its surroundings, and between the artist and his subject. Munch positions himself somewhere between distant observer and empathetic eyewitness, capturing both the rawness of sorrow and the fluid nature of perception itself.

Ultimately, Weeping Woman reflects Munch’s ongoing exploration of artistic repetition, emotion, and subjectivity. By creating multiple versions of the same motif, he challenges the idea of a singular, definitive artwork. Instead, he invites us to embrace the complexities of artistic interpretation—where the more we look, the more we see.
