Official reproduction of Edvard Munch's work The Waves, (1908) from MUNCH's collection.

Edvard Munch’s Waves (1908) is a striking example of his experiments with abstraction and expressive brushwork. Moving away from the figurative compositions he is best known for, Munch here focuses on the rhythm of nature itself. Broad horizontal swathes of blue, green, and purple, layered with parallel brushstrokes, evoke the movement of the ocean, while areas of raw canvas create a sense of openness and depth.

Despite its abstract nature, Waves retains a connection to reality. The horizontal composition and shifting colors suggest the ever-changing surface of the sea, a subject Munch explored while staying in Warnemünde, a coastal town where he painted and studied the ocean’s movements. The work also reflects his ongoing interest in the materiality of paint—his brushwork is gestural, at times almost raw, revealing his process and reinforcing the painting’s immediacy.

Munch never exhibited Waves, and it remains unclear whether he considered it a finished work or part of an ongoing study. What is certain, however, is that the painting represents his fearless approach to experimentation. It aligns with his broader exploration of nature’s forces—both external and internal—placing him in dialogue with the modernist movements that were emerging across Europe at the time.

Printed on museum-quality, FSC-certified paper (210 g/m²), this fine art print retains the depth and vibrancy of Munch’s original creation. Available in multiple sizes, it is perfect for creating a contemplative and artistic atmosphere in any space.
