Official reproduction of Edvard Munch's work Two Women on the Shore, (ca 1935) from MUNCH's collection.

Edvard Munch was an artist who constantly explored new techniques and artistic expressions. Throughout his career, he often created parallel works in different media, especially painting and printmaking. He would typically develop a motif in painting first and then reinterpret it in printmaking. In the case of Two Women on the Shore, the motif was initially developed as a woodcut in 1898 and revisited in a painted version nearly 40 years later, around 1935.

Munch’s woodcuts were characterized by his innovative use of color and texture. He often used multiple woodblocks to experiment with color combinations and patterns. In some cases, he divided a single woodblock into sections, inking each section with a different color, and then reassembling the pieces like a puzzle before printing. This technique simplified the printing process for multicolored prints but also required the composition to be abstracted and reduced in detail. This method allowed Munch to play with different color schemes, adding a layer of freedom and experimentation to his work.

In the painted version of Two Women on the Shore, Munch retained the compositional structure of the original woodcut. The painting features a pink sky, darker near the horizon, blending seamlessly with the light blue water and yellow column of moonlight. The women’s dresses are vividly colored, and the vegetation in the upper-left corner combines shades of green that feel more abstract than naturalistic. The stones in the lower half of the picture have decorative stripes and patterns, appearing stylized and geometric rather than realistic.

Both the woodcut and the painted version of this motif emphasize abstraction and simplification. While the woodcut reduces details due to the constraints of the medium, the painting maintains this abstracted quality, suggesting that Munch enjoyed the aesthetic and conceptual challenges of translating between media. The painting reflects his pleasure in the creative process and his fascination with experimenting with color and form.

Two Women on the Shore exemplifies Munch’s ability to reimagine his motifs across different artistic techniques, each version offering a unique perspective on his original vision.
