Official reproduction of Edvard Munch's work The Sun, (1910-1913) from MUNCH's collection.
The Sun (1910–13) is one of Edvard Munch’s most ambitious and striking works, a powerful visualization of light, energy, and the natural world. In addition to the monumental version in MUNCH's collection and the variant that resides in the University of Oslo’s Aula, Munch created several variations of the motif, each exploring the dazzling interaction of sunlight with land, sea, and sky. Across these paintings, he experimented with the optical effects of blazing light, using bold colors and dynamic brushwork to convey the sun’s overwhelming radiance.
One of the earliest versions, painted on cardboard, was photographed in Munch’s outdoor studio in Kragerø, possibly serving as an inspirational working model. In this variation, the sun appears as a dark central disk, surrounded by striated, mosaic-like forms that arch overhead, while concentric semi-ovals below suggest an enormous eye superimposed on the sun. This mystical interpretation aligns with Munch’s recurring themes of cosmic and human interconnectedness.
In other versions, Munch depicted the sun as an explosion of spectral color, employing orthogonal lines and layered wet-on-wet strokes to create a sense of radiant energy. His spontaneous painting process is evident in these works, as he often painted over still-wet layers, leaving traces of his rapid artistic decisions. In some areas, he applied thick paint directly from the tube, creating pronounced lines that stand out against the canvas, while in others, he used diluted pigment to form soft, flowing rivulets of color.
Munch also painted The Sun on unprimed canvas, using the raw fabric as an integral element of the composition. The techniques he refined in these smaller studies—gestural brushwork, layered color, and an emphasis on raw materiality—were translated into the vast Aula murals, where they contribute to the monumental sense of energy and motion. These paintings, with their bold execution and vibrant luminosity, remain some of the most expressive representations of light in modern art.
