Official reproduction of Edvard Munch's work The Scream, (1893) from MUNCH's collection.

On his lithograph of The Scream in 1895, Edvard Munch included the title and the text, “I heard the great scream through nature,” which was inscribed in German. This text was intended to accompany the image, suggesting that Munch felt the scene could not stand alone or be fully understood without context. However, in the painted versions of The Scream, Munch deliberately omitted such textual explanations, leaving the work open to the viewer's interpretation.

When he exhibited The Scream, Munch presented it as part of his larger series Die Liebe ("Love"), which explored the moods, emotions, and conflicts surrounding relationships. The series, encompassing works like The Voice, The Kiss, Vampire, and Jealousy, culminated with The Scream, originally titled “Despair.” Together, these pieces narrate a cycle of emotional transformation, from the joy of love to its painful disintegration. On the reverse side of one painting, Munch even sketched a motif from Vampire, indicating that he considered these works interconnected.

Munch viewed The Scream as an expression of existential anguish, emphasizing the inner turmoil and depersonalization of the central figure. In this iteration, the figure seems overwhelmed, perhaps by nature itself, represented in the swirling patterns and vibrant hues of the sky. The work encapsulates a moment of human despair and isolation, reflecting Munch’s belief in art as a medium to explore the depths of human emotion.

For this version of The Scream, Munch chose crayon and pastel on cardboard, a departure from traditional oil on canvas. The choice of medium offered several advantages: pastels allowed for vibrant, varied textures, while cardboard was less cumbersome, more affordable, and conducive to large-scale work. This medium also contributed to the immediacy and impermanence of the image, reinforcing themes of transience and existential uncertainty.

The use of pastel on cardboard aligned with trends of the time, popularized by artists like Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec. Yet for Munch, this choice also reflected his artistic philosophy. The fragility of the material, combined with its associations with everyday life, challenged the traditional notions of artistic “nobility.” Instead, it imbued the work with modern relevance and emphasized the raw emotional resonance of the motif.

The Scream, in all its versions, stands as a testament to Munch’s ability to merge personal expression with universal themes of anxiety and alienation.
