Official custom print of Edvard Munch's work The Scream, (1910?) from MUNCH's collection.

Edvard Munch’s The Scream is one of the most recognizable works of art in the world, yet its creator’s name often remains in the background. Over time, the central undulating figure with hands raised to its face and mouth agape has transcended its origins, becoming a ubiquitous cultural symbol. Its image has appeared in countless forms: as blow-up dolls, coffee mugs, tattoos, political cartoons, and more. From beer labels to parodies, The Scream has been adapted in ways Munch could never have imagined, becoming an icon of popular culture.

The painting was first exhibited in Berlin in 1893 as part of Munch’s series Die Liebe ("Love"), which depicted the stages of a romantic relationship from blissful beginnings to devastating endings. By the early 20th century, The Scream had become pivotal to this series, symbolizing the transition from life’s experiences of love to those of despair and death. The painting’s placement at the threshold of love’s transformation—from sweetness to bitterness—perfectly aligned it with the cycle later known as The Frieze of Life.

Initially, Munch resisted selling the individual paintings in the Frieze of Life cycle, but the first version of The Scream was eventually separated and sold to Norwegian collector Olaf Schou in 1902. Schou later donated it to the Norwegian National Gallery. This left Munch without possession of his masterpiece until he painted another version, the one that now resides in the museum’s collection. Scholars believe this new version was created in 1910, as it bears stylistic differences from the original while retaining its core elements.

Munch’s decision to recreate The Scream underscores its importance in his oeuvre. The later version retains the primal energy and emotional resonance of the first but demonstrates a shift in artistic style, suggesting Munch’s evolving relationship with the motif. Unlike the vivid originality of the 1893 painting, the 1910 version integrates subtle changes in composition and execution that reflect Munch’s artistic maturity.

As the enduring centerpiece of his Frieze of Life, The Scream continues to connect the experiences of love, death, and the existential anxieties that define the human condition.
