Official reproduction of Edvard Munch's work The Scream, (1895) from MUNCH's collection.

The lithograph version of The Scream stands apart as one of Edvard Munch’s most significant renditions of his iconic motif. While the first painted versions are known for their vivid, dramatic use of color, this lithograph is entirely monochromatic, rendered in solid black lines devoid of any tonal variation. What prompted Munch to strip this version of all color?

A straightforward explanation could be technical skill or the practical limitations of printmaking during the 1890s. Munch began experimenting with lithography in December 1894, and this version represents one of his earliest forays into the medium. However, a deeper look suggests this was an intentional choice. The absence of color and the stark contrast of black and white emphasize the universal and timeless nature of the emotional experience conveyed in The Scream, as well as the monumental weight of its message.

Lithography, one of the oldest printmaking techniques, had undergone a revival in the late 19th century, rediscovered and adapted for artistic use. Munch’s lithograph of The Scream draws on this tradition, using techniques such as hatching and cross-hatching to create depth and texture. He also employs curved, parallel lines to suggest movement and intensity, their rhythm evoking the pulsating energy of the scream itself. This method links the lithograph to woodcuts, a traditional printmaking medium often associated with expressive minimalism.

The decision to work in black and white also aligns with Munch’s broader thematic focus. Black and white is a world of absolutes—there is no room for ambiguity or compromise. In this stark world, emotional extremes such as anxiety, despair, and existential dread are laid bare. Munch’s mastery of these contrasts is evident in the tension between the inky blackness of his lines and the unmarked whiteness of the paper, which creates a visual metaphor for the interplay between despair and emptiness.

This lithographic version of The Scream highlights Munch’s ability to reimagine the motif across different media while maintaining its core emotional impact. By emphasizing line and form over color, Munch transforms the artwork into an eternal and universal symbol of human anxiety and existential dread. In doing so, he not only advanced the aesthetic language of printmaking but also cemented The Scream’s place as a timeless emblem of the human condition.
