Official custom print of Edvard Munch's work The Hands, (1893-1894) from MUNCH's collection. Oil and crayon on unprimed cardboard.

The Hands (1893–94) is one of Edvard Munch’s most provocative works, delving into themes of vulnerability, power, and the complexities of human relationships. The composition centers on a woman in a half-length pose, her hands positioned behind her head, exposing her figure to the viewer in a manner that blurs the line between voluntary openness and coerced submission.

The ambiguity of her gaze, obscured by darkened eyes, intensifies the tension in the piece. Is she looking inward, downward in shame, or outward in defiance? This uncertainty, paired with the bold use of color—such as the aggressive yellow tone of one hand—invites viewers to question societal power dynamics, particularly those between men and women.

Munch’s layered symbolism is evident in the hands that appear throughout the piece, some reaching out, others forming shadows or outlines, and others seemingly pulling at the fabric of the woman’s clothing. These hands could represent desire, control, or aggression, leaving the interpretation open to the viewer. The interplay between the figure and the background, combined with Munch’s experimental use of oil and crayon, further disrupts traditional depictions of the female form, challenging voyeuristic expectations.

With its raw emotion and confrontational imagery, The Hands remains a compelling exploration of power, desire, and the tension between exposure and concealment in human interactions.
