Official reproduction of Edvard Munch's work The Day After, (1894) from MUNCH's collection.

Edvard Munch’s The Day After (1894) offers a candid portrayal of the “new,” liberated woman at the turn of the century. Created during a time of significant societal transformation, this drypoint etching captures a woman reclining on a bed, bottles scattered on the table beside her – remnants of the night before. Munch’s work reflects a cultural moment when women were embracing newfound freedoms, challenging traditional gender roles, and stepping into realms once dominated by men, including academia, politics, and the arts.

The woman in The Day After is not depicted with judgment but as an equal counterpart to men, capable of indulgence and pleasure without shame. She embodies a vision of liberation, where ecstasy – whether rooted in joy, intoxication, or eroticism – is no longer confined by societal expectations. Munch’s neutral yet empathetic gaze toward his subject counters the critical view of his time, which often associated women’s liberation with moral decline.

This work sparked controversy, with critics of the day calling the piece a “drunken harlot.” At the heart of this backlash lay the temperance movement, which closely tied sobriety to female virtue. Munch, however, refused to strip the woman of her dignity, presenting her instead as a complex, independent individual.

With The Day After, Munch contributed to the growing dialogue on women’s autonomy, celebrating their right to exist freely and unapologetically. The work remains a poignant reminder of the intersection between art and social change.
