Official reproduction of Edvard Munch's work Summer Night. Mermaid, (1893) from MUNCH's collection.
Edvard Munch’s Summer Night. Mermaid (1893) intertwines fantasy and reality, depicting a mermaid gazing at the moonlit horizon. Her golden tresses float languidly in the water as she rests, embodying both allure and melancholy. The mermaid is a figure steeped in myth, often portrayed as a creature of duality—part woman, part fish—symbolizing temptation and mystery.
In this composition, the mermaid’s fish tail is hidden beneath the surface, emphasizing her human form. Flanked by two girls, she is positioned among the rocks near the water’s edge. The moon’s reflection creates a serene yet enigmatic atmosphere, as the primary hues of blue, red, and yellow interplay across the water and figures.
Mermaids were a recurring motif in the Symbolist art of the late 19th century, shaped by cultural myths and literary works such as Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid (1837). Munch’s rendition aligns with this tradition, blending mythical elements with personal experiences. The mermaid motif may also reference Munch’s relationship with Milly Thaulow, whom he likened to a siren, a figure who lures men to their demise.
The painting’s muted, dreamlike quality mirrors Munch’s exploration of emotional depth, making it a quintessential example of his Symbolist oeuvre.
Printed on museum-quality, FSC-certified paper (210 g/m²), this fine art print retains the depth and vibrancy of Munch’s original creation. Available in multiple sizes, it is perfect for creating a contemplative and artistic atmosphere in any space.
