Official reproduction of Edvard Munch's work Separation, (1896) from MUNCH's collection.
Edvard Munch’s Separation (1896) is a deeply evocative exploration of love, loss, and emotional detachment. In this poignant composition, Munch captures the psychological turmoil that arises when two lovers part ways—not just in the physical sense, but emotionally and spiritually. The painting conveys the anguish of separation through its symbolic use of color, movement, and composition.
The central figures—a man and a woman—are depicted in an estranged stance. The woman faces away, her long blonde hair flowing behind her, symbolically intertwining with the man’s figure. A single lock of her hair wraps around the man’s neck and hand, an image that suggests both lingering attachment and painful parting. His face is obscured, his posture slumped, and his hand is painted in a striking blood-red hue, as though he is bleeding from the heart—an allusion to the deep emotional wounds caused by separation.
Munch’s masterful use of symbolism intensifies the painting’s emotional impact. The red plant at the man’s feet, nourished by his own metaphorical blood, serves as a reminder of renewal and transformation. This motif echoes Munch’s Blossom of Pain, reinforcing the idea that suffering can give birth to growth and creativity.
With Separation, Munch delves into the universal experience of love’s dissolution, capturing the inescapable pain and haunting memories that remain even after parting. The painting stands as a testament to Munch’s ability to translate raw human emotion onto canvas, offering a deeply personal yet profoundly relatable depiction of heartbreak and renewal.

About the original:
- Comment: Painted on a coarse jute canvas with approximately 7 x 7 threads per cm². The canvas has a striking texture and was primed by Munch himself with natural chalk, creating an absorbent ground that partially absorbs the binder from the paint layers. This contributes to the painting’s dry and matte appearance while preserving the intensity of the colors. A distinctive feature of this painting is the use of "gold paint," consisting of small copper flakes with approximately 10–15% zinc by weight.
