Official reproduction of Edvard Munch's work Galloping Horse, (1910-1912) from MUNCH's collection.

Galloping Horse (1910–12) captures a moment of wild energy and tension as a galloping horse charges toward the viewer. The horse’s powerful form, depicted in sharp, dynamic lines, contrasts with the blurred, barely defined figures of the children on the right. The painting evokes a sense of fear and urgency, as though the viewer is directly in the horse’s path, amplifying the emotional impact of the scene.

Munch’s composition is cinematic in its effect, creating a flat plane where the figures and the horse converge. The childlike figure facing the viewer, rendered in white and red spots, expresses terror, while another child turns away, their fear conveyed through body language rather than detail. This interplay between the sharply distinguishable horse and the more abstract human figures heightens the viewer’s emotional response, transforming the image into an intense visual experience.

The painting explores the concept of motion—not just physical, but emotional and psychological. The viewer is invited to engage with the fear and energy radiating from the scene, making it a deeply immersive work.
