Official custom print of Edvard Munch's work Death and the Woman, (1894) from MUNCH's collection.

Death and the Woman (1894) is a hauntingly intimate portrayal of the interplay between life and death, a central theme in Edvard Munch’s body of work. In this drypoint print, a skeletal figure, stooped and gaunt, is passionately embraced by a vibrant, naked woman. The skeleton, seemingly caught off guard, leans into the woman’s kiss as though they are both falling. Her flowing hair cascades down her back, emphasizing her vitality in stark contrast to the skeleton’s lifeless form.

The composition is framed by organic, swirling shapes that resemble sperm gradually transforming into embryos, suggesting the biological connection between creation and mortality. This motif, rooted in mythological and Renaissance imagery, reimagines the age-old theme of Death and the Maiden, where death seduces or overtakes youthful beauty. However, in Munch’s interpretation, the dynamic shifts—here, the woman dominates death, reversing traditional power roles.

This work embodies Munch’s exploration of the transient nature of youth, beauty, and existence, inviting viewers to reflect on life’s paradox: only in the moment of creation does death gain meaning. The interplay of passion and decay underscores Munch’s profound understanding of the human condition.
