Official reproduction of Edvard Munch's work Vampire, (1895) from MUNCH's collection.
The first time the painting was exhibited, in 1893, it was titled "Love and Pain." This title suggests a tender and loving relationship between two people, with a woman kissing a man on the back of the neck. It is likely that Edvard Munch’s close friend, the writer Stanislaw Przybyszewski, influenced him to change the title. Przybyszewski, inspired by the misogynistic ideas of the time, published his own highly personal interpretation of the motif. He described it as "A broken man with a biting vampire face on his neck" and wrote further: "But he will not be free of the vampire; he will not be free of the pain; and the woman will always be seated there, always biting him with a thousand adders' tongues, with a thousand poisonous fangs." Munch likely appreciated this description, as evidenced by his decision to change the title to Vampire.
