Official reproduction of Edvard Munch's work Madonna, (1894) from MUNCH's collection.
The Madonna image is a recurring theme in visual art, with Western art history filled with paintings bearing this title. These works often depict the Virgin Mary, usually holding the infant Jesus in her arms or on her lap. Renowned artists like Leonardo, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, and Raphael all created their own versions of the mother of Jesus, painting their interpretations of the Madonna. Edvard Munch’s Madonna, however, marks a radical shift from previous representations. In his work, the figure is not a young virgin, but rather a woman who fully embraces eroticism, equal to men. Munch described the image as "‘woman in a state of surrender – where she acquires the afflicted beauty of a Madonna."
There are five painted versions of Madonna, and in at least one of them, Munch initially included a wooden frame adorned with sperm and a fetus. This provocative frame was met with disapproval by several of Munch’s contemporaries, likely prompting him to replace it with a more conventional one. However, the original frame persisted in Munch’s print version of Madonna, where it transformed into a decorative border that became a key element of the central image. This approach allowed Munch to conceal the frame for more conservative viewers while keeping it intact for those with more avant-garde tastes.
About the original:
- Painted with consistently thin strokes that allows the white ground to shine through in many areas. In the top layer the paint has also been sprayed onto the canvas. The painting was stolen from the Munchmuseum on August 22, 2004, and returned on September 1, 2006.
