Edvard Munch met the English violinist Eva Mudocci in Berlin during his participation in an exhibition of the Berlin Secessionists in 1902. A talented musician from a young age, Mudocci toured Europe with pianist Bella Edwards, performing concerts. In 1903, Munch and Mudocci crossed paths again in Paris, and their affection for each other deepened.
Munch made two portraits of Eva Mudocci, both lithographic prints. This image, full of warmth and intimacy, depicts Mudocci with a sense of ease and affection. The other lithograph, titled Salome, portrays Mudocci as Salome from the Bible, the woman who instigated the murder of John the Baptist, with Munch depicted as John, helpless and at the mercy of Salome's lethal beauty.
